Creepy but common appliance issues and how to fix them in Halloween

07/10/2025

It’s close to midnight, and something evil’s lurking in the dark, ‘cause this is a thriller, thriller night. Weird noises, creaking doors, “who turned on the TV?-not me!-oh, then, who did?” kind of stuff…and then your kitchen appliances begin to do strange things in the middle of the night, because that sort of common appliance issues just happen when you need them less.

Before you call the Ghostbusters, let’s take a chance on us, like Abba would sing, and try to fix those haunted appliance problems with our Halloween-themed guide, bringing your home back from the dead (electrically speaking). And yes, just to make you feel better, most of these creepy happenings have a simple explanation from this world and not from “The Upside down”.

Meringhe ghosts haunting your kitchen over a dark countertop

1.    The possessed washing machine

Have you ever heard your washer sound like a zombie trying to escape from inside? It might sound terrifying, but the cause is usually quite common and quite simple.

The cause: The drum is unbalanced. When heavy items like towels or blankets sit on one side, the machine can shake violently.

The fix:

  • Stop the cycle and redistribute the load evenly.
  • Make sure the machine sits level on the floor — you can adjust its feet if needed.
  • Avoid overloading; your washer needs some breathing space, too.
  • Also, make sure the appliance is installed on a solid and leveled floor.

If the sound of the washing machine is more like somebody is shaking maracas inside, and you have kids, it’s quite probably your little ones brought most of the sand they have found on the way home in their pockets. No exorcist required.

2. The fridge that moans at midnight

A fridge that hums, rattles, or moans in the dark like Chewbacca can be enough to send chills down your spine. This is one of the most terrifying yet most common appliance issues at home.

The cause: Most fridges make some sound when cooling, but extra noise often means the fan is dirty or the compressor is struggling to survive. They may just need a good clean.

The fix:

  • Clean the back coils (unplug the refrigerator first, please). Dust and dirt can make your fridge work harder and noisier.
  • Check that nothing inside the fridge is touching the walls, as vibrations can amplify the noise.
  • Look up the fridge manual to be sure all the common installation items are in the right place. Unbalanced levelling legs, misplaced shelves, or similar issues can cause noises, too.

If the moaning continues, it might be time for a new fan motor. Your fridge is not haunted, just tired.

3. The oven that burns like the Spanish Inquisition

You set your oven to 180 °C, but your sponge cake comes out darker than a vampire’s cloak. What is happening?

The cause: Uneven heating, a broken thermostat, or blocked vents can turn your oven into a bonfire.

The fix:

  • Use an oven thermometer to check the real temperature.
  • Clean the inside regularly; leftover grease can cause hot spots. If the dirt is too much for an ordinary cleaning, it is the right moment to use self-cleaning features, like HydroClean or pyrolysis.
  • If the heat of the oven is inconsistent, the thermostat might need replacing. And yes, before buying a brand new oven, consider that repairing might be a solution. Always ask a professional.

A well-calibrated oven will make sure your Halloween bakes are spooky but not deadly.

4. The dryer that eats socks

All year long, but especially on Halloween, mysterious disappearances happen… your socks will never be the same again. Your dryer seems to swallow one of each pair. However, it is not a conspiracy of the Worldwide Sock Producer Association, but one of the most common appliance issues ever.

The cause: Socks can slip between the drum and the door seal, especially in older models.

The fix:

  • Always check the drum and filter after each load. There is usually something left behind. Also, be sure to check it before loading it in, because some objects may be inside and you didn’t notice.
  • Clean the lint trap regularly. It helps your dryer breathe and prevents overheating.
  • Consider using a mesh laundry bag for small and delicate items, like underwear.

Your socks may not have been spirited away,  just trapped in the dark side of the force dryer.

5. The water heater is ice-cold like the breath of a ghost

You’ve had a hard day at the office, on public transport, in a traffic jam, and all you want to do is just arrive home and have a warm, nice shower. But the forces of the dark have other plans for you. You turn on the shower, and a blast of freezing water goes straight to your very bones. Is that the personification of evil forces?

The cause: Don’t panic, your water heater isn’t cursed (probably). The most common answer is that you probably have a problem with the thermostat, one of the components of the heater, or a buildup of sediment at the bottom of the tank.

The fix:

  • Make sure the power or gas supply is actually on. Even a water heater needs a spark of life to work, just like Frankenstein.
  • For electric models, reset the thermostat. Sometimes, gremlins are working on it at night, you know.
  • If you have a tank heater, drain and flush it once a year. Sediment loves to hide inside and steal your heat, one degree at a time.
  • Still cold? The heating element or thermostat may have gone to appliance heaven— it’s time for a replacement.

Keep your water heater happy and warm, and it’ll keep the ghosts of cold showers in a galaxy far, far away.
